What does come to your mind when you hear the word “balance”?

For me, the first thing that pops into my mind is wisdom, fulfillment, freedom, prosperity, and happiness. Wow! It’s a dream to have a balanced life, isn’t it? But how to find balance in life? (That’s a million-dollar question.)

Balance is a situation in which different things exist in equal, correct, or good amounts. (Oxford Dictionary)

I believe that one of the most challenges in life is to keep our life in balance.

In modern days, we have so much on our plates. Working inside and out of the house; Taking care of ourselves through eating healthy, exercising, and practicing mindfulness; Working; Shopping the groceries; Cooking; Schooling kids; House working; Nurturing close relationships with spouses, children, friends, and relatives; Investing money; Learning new skills; Caregiving kids and the elderly, and so on.

Finding balance in life is not an easy task to tackle at all. But we can stack the odds in our favor, and do our best to have a balanced life with some simple analysis periodically.

  • How’s my life going? Am I filling overwhelmed? Overwhelmed with what? Is this worth it? What can I do to lighten this burden?
  • Which realms of life am I focused on? Personal or professional? Is the balance right? Is there anything I can do to improve one realm or the other?
  • What do I value? Do I value nurturing close friendships or spending time on social media? Do I value spending time with my spouse or catching up with the news? Do I value exercising or chatting on the phone?
  • Which realms of life am I hard on? Do you have to take it easy?

After the analysis, make a plan. Set your priorities. Set when and how long each activity might take place. By doing so, you’re more likely, to stick with your plan and live a life that you choose to live, not a life the circumstances made you live. In other words, you’re going to live by design, not by default.

It’s a given that you’re going to find yourself in a rut again. Don’t need to despair. Just pause for a while and adjust the equation again. Do it over and over again. Life is not a straight line or an exact science. It has its ebbs and flows, and we must learn to dance to its tune.

The crux point is to notice when things go right and when things might be adjusted.
