Have you ever thought about being able to access your memories whenever you want to? Like a videotape, you rewind and watch it again and again as many times as you wish.

The TV series Black Mirror in the third episode of the first season brought out this possible way of having your memories stored in a hard drive throughout your whole life.

It’s an intriguing and interesting story that makes us reflect about ways we want to see the world around us whether through recorded memories or organic memories (what’s called “being blind eye”)

I believe that when it comes to good memories, you might have feelings of nostalgia. You want to come back in time to live those happy moments again. If you are able to repeat them that’s fine, it’ll work just as a reminder: “Oh, I should do that again.” But if you can’t? Whether because people involved are not there anymore, or the financial conditions now can’t afford that, and so on… you might turn out to ruminate from past good memories.

Similarly, when it comes to bad memories, you may have feelings of resentments, anger, shame, and annoyance. You may end up brooding over bad past events that aren’t worthy to recall, like trauma, abuse in childhood, betrayal, or argument. The list goes on and on.

I don’t think that human nature was designed to deal with this feature to have all memories accessible with a touch of a button. We struggle with our “organic memories”, memories that a human being is able to store. I wonder what if we were able to rewind a memory and rewatch it as many times as necessary to indulge our curiosity. I’d wager a guess that we’ll become slaves of the past. Obsessed with all the freaking detail of life.

This episode reminded me of some strong emotional conversations I had. I used to brood over and over about what the other person said, what I would have said. These self-talks hurt me. It doesn’t take me anywhere. When I overthink about it for minutes, immediately after the event, that’s not too bad, however, when it lasts for days, I feel stuck on these thoughts, it paralyzes me, the only thing I wish is to forget that unpleasant moment, to get rid of all those memories from my mind. Imagine if it was available with the touch of a bottom? No, thanks. I pass.
