I’ve started learning English, I believe like everyone else, with a specific purpose in mind. In my case, it was the Master’s degree application. For the test, the only ability required was reading. After about six months of learning English, I felt that I wanted more. I wish to understand what native English speakers were saying. Then, again it wasn’t enough, I also yearned to be able to communicate in English both, writing and speaking. The long story short is: I fell in love with English, and it bore these good fruits:

  1. Foreign friends: I’d never ever thought that I’d be a friend of people around the globe even without ever seeing them in person. I learn a lot from them through their thoughts, opinions, recommendations, and culture. It’s sparked my wish to travel around the world.
  2. Global citizen: English gave me the capacity to communicate in this global language, it made me feel like a member of a global community sharing good wishes of a better world and empathy with the “different.”
  3. A Youtuber: I’d never imagined myself recording videos and sharing them publicly on YouTube, but English made it possible. My YouTube channel was created with the intention to improve my speaking skills and at the same time share my ideas, methods, thoughts that might benefit someone else in their language learning journey.
  4. A singing lover: I discovered that singing makes me feel better. It boosts my energy.
  5. An electronic music lover. Before, I couldn’t understand why people liked those gym songs, but now I’m one of them. I feel good when I understand the lyrics and better off when I sing along.
  6. An avid reader: I can say that throughout my life I used to read, but not as much as now. All books that I read, I read in English either non-fiction books or novels.
  7. An avid podcast listener: Before learning English, I had never heard about podcasts (in Brazil they’ve become popular in the last two years, I guess). I can kill two birds with one stone: hone my listening skills and learn tons of content through the shows.

I’d love to hear from you. What has English brought to your life apart from the your primary goals? Please let a comment below.🙂

See you next time. 👋🏼
